The Network
Our network (the bioengineering domain) is comprised of 14 Unix workstations (hosts). You can log into any of these. There are also many Macs and PCs with network connections in the different labs. Each host is identified by a unique internet (or IP) address.

Hosts
* bioeng - Sun Sparc Station 5 in 4114A EBU1 (IP address 132.239.93.143)
* laguna - SGI Indigo2 Extreme in 285 SERF (132.239.93.146)
* diablo - SGI Indigo2 Extreme in 285 SERF (132.239.93.147)
* woodson - SGI Indy SC in 285 SERF (132.239.93.141)

* capillary - SGI Indy SC in 5511 EBU1 (132.239.25.69)

The operating system
All of the machines in our domain run some flavor of System V UNIX, with BSD extensions. Specifically, The SGI's run IRIX 6.3,and the SUN runs Solaris 2.5

Filesystems and NFS
Many of our hosts export (share) their filesystems ("disk") with all the other machines in our domain. Thus, many directories on your "local" machine are filesystems physically located on other machines. This will be transparent to you, however, via the NFS (Network File System) software. This allows data to be moved around with ease.
