Data and Sharing
Backing up Data
Your home directory is backed up nightly, but I recommend backing up important data yourself. I can show you how to do this.

Exchanging Files Between Computers
As stated before, many machines share their filesystem. Type "df" to find out which machines export their filesystem, and on which directory it is mounted. You can then simply copy or move the file(s) as you normally would. If this is not possible, use FTP (see later).

Appleshare Volumes
To set up an appleshare volume, which allows easy transfers of files between UNIX machines and Macs, do the following steps:
1) log into bioeng
2) type "/usr/local/bin/SetUpAufs" -
This will create an initial appleshare volume. You can now copy your file(s) to ~/localdisk/mac.

To access this file(s) on the mac, do the following:
1) Go into the chooser, and Select the AMES appletalk Zone.
2) Click on Appleshare and Select the Bioeng AUFS appleshare server. You will then be prompted for your unix login name and password.
