THE INDIGO MAGIC ENVIRONMENT
The Indigo Magic User Environment is SGI's new icon-based user interface. It provides a uniform, integrated environment through which many aspects of the IRIX operating system can be accessed. It makes extensive use of icons and Drag and Drop technology to allow users to interact with and configure their system. Various manuals about the environment are available through "insight".

MEDIA AND VIDEO TOOLS AVAILABLE
Capture
Capture is an interactive program to record digital media files from the camera and microphone on the SGI Indys. It will save files in SGI "Movie" format (see below).
Movieplayer/Moviemaker
These programs will allow you to play/edit an SGI Movie file. Moviemaker allows you to clip a single frame from a movie and save it as an SGI Image.
Imgview/imginfo/imgworks
These programs allow you to display and Image, get info on this image, or manipulate/enhance the image.
Xv
Xv is a general-purpose graphics file viewer/manipulator. It supports most file formats.
qkcapture/qkplay
These 2 programs will allow capture and play (respectively) in real-time.

SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT/PROGRAMMING TOOLS
Each machine has a C compiler, a Fortran compiler, and the NAG numerical libraries. Furthermore, there is a C++ compiler on woodson, bioecl, heart5, laguna, and diablo. woodson currently has libraries for digital media development.
Note to developers: Core files are removed nightly, so please use them ASAP to track down bugs.

NETWORK TOOLS
Telnet
Telnet is used to communicate with another host. Type "telnet hostname"; you will be prompted for your username and password.
FTP
Ftp allows a user to transfer files to and from a remote network site. Type "ftp hostname"; you will be prompted for your username and password.
Fetch
Fetch is a Macintosh program that uses ftp and allows the user to transfer files to and from a Mac.
Rtin/trn
Rtin is a readnews program available on both the SGI's and heart3/4. Trn is available on heart3/4. These allow you to read the USENET news for various newsgroups.
Gopher
Gopher is a menu based Internet searching utility. To run, type "xgopher" on any SGI, or telnet to ux1.cso.uiuc.edu and login as "gopher".
Mosaic and Nestcape
Mosaic and Netscape are an Internet information browser. You can find everything from the latest satellite weather shots to Bill Clinton's budget proposal.
WWW
WWW (World Wide Web) is a hypertext document browser. Telnet to info.cern.ch.
Archie
Archie allows one to find/search FTP archives for programs/info. Telnet to archie.rutgers.edu and login as "archie".
WAIS
WAIS allows subject searches through selected archives. Telnet to nnsc.nsf.net, login as "wais".
Eudora
Eudora allows one to read mail from a Mac.
