Overview >> Collaboration
The research projects carried out by the members in UCSD bioengineering
are described in the following pages under individual members. There are
close collaborations between the bioengineering faculty and other scientists
at UCSD and elsewhere. These are fostered by an Organized Research Unit
established in 1991 - The Whitaker Institute of Biomedical Engineering.
The instructional and research programs in
the Department of Bioengineering are characterized by interdisciplinary
relationships with the Departments on the general campus (e.g., Mechanical
and Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical
and Computer Engineering, Structural Engineering, Economics, Mathematics,
Physics, Chemistry, and Biology), and in the School of Medicine (e.g.,
Neurosciences, Pathology, Pharmacology, Medicine, Surgery, Orthopedics,
and Ophthalmology), as well as associated campus institutes such as the
Center for Magnetic Recording Research, Center of Excellence for Advanced
Materials, Center for Molecular Genetics, Center for Molecular Medicine,
Institute for Pure and Applied Physical Sciences, Scripps Institution
of Oceanography, UCSD Center for Energy and Combustion Research, Institute
for Nonlinear Science, Institute for Mechanics and Materials, and the
Institute for Biomedical Engineering.
