Student Qualifications
Bioengineering industrial internships are available to undergraduate students who have completed 90 units of course work as well as all lower-division course requirements, including general science requirements (Math, Physics, Chemistry) and have some laboratory experience. Participating students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 and be able to dedicate 12 -20 hours of work per week.
Program Benefits
The Industrial Internship Program provides great value to students:
- The practical experience prepares students to meet the technical needs of industry, giving them a competitive edge.
- Students gain valuable insights into the relationship between theory and practice, and hence, a better understanding of the relevance of course work in their major.
- Every effort is made to maximize the benefit of the internship experience for the student. Students' skills and expectations are closely matched to industrial sponsors' needs and training opportunities.
Student Participation
Students are expected to devote a minimum of 12-20 hours of effort per week (or up to full-time in the summer) at the sponsoring facility during the period of their internship and should plan their internship experience in advance, taking into account their academic course work, schedules, and the need for timely graduation. Internships are normally undertaken for academic credit (BE196) or completed on a voluntary basis. Although there may be some internship opportunities that provide partial remuneration in lieu of academic credit, companies are under no obligation or expectation to offer some financial remuneration. Upon the completion of the first 10 weeks of the student's internship, students are required to submit a brief report of their internship experience to the Industrial Internship Coordinator.
Where to Start
Once a student is ready to begin their internship search, they must sign up for the program by filling out the appropriate application for their Bioenginnering Degree Concentration (i.e., ABET, Biotech, or Pre-Med). This can be done either through the web or at the Industrial Internship Program Office on the 4th floor of Engineering Building Unit 1 (EBU1). After filling out the appropriate application, the student must submit a completed resume to the Industrial Internship Coordinator for submission to company recruiters. Students can drop off their resumes at the Industrial Internship Program Office or attach it as a WORD document and send to iship@bioeng.ucsd.edu.
How the Program Works
Once the student has submitter thier completed application and resume, the Industrial Internship Coordinator will review their academic record and application information. Once this has been done, the Coordinator will begin the internship search for the student. Students learn about current internship opportunitites through email. The Coordinator will post all internship openings to the students through the email address posted on the student's application and resume. When a student is interested in an opportunity, the student should reply to the Coordinator with a statement of interest in the position. When a student expresses interest in an internship opportunity, the Coordinator submits the student's Application and Resume to the company for review. If the company is interested in interviewing the student for the internship position, the company representative or Coordinator will notify the student by phone or email . Any questions regarding the format of the Industrial Intenship Program should be directed to the Industrial Internship Coordinator.
