Walt Baxter praised Joy for the excellent work she has done and informed the members that Joy was offered a permanent position at Medtronic Inc.

Students Internships Update
Imani Tyus updated the members on the program development. She thanked those companies who already participated in the program. Last year seventy-five undergraduate students were placed for summer internships. This year, Imani has already found 70 places and will be sending the e-mail announcements to the industrial affiliates. Dr. Chien praised Imani for the excellent coordination of the program and the perfect matching of students and companies. Imani provided her e-mail address for those who are interested to participate. Dr. Ratcliffe was very complimentary about the way UCSD dealt with the issues of intellectual property that arose from internship. Bill Craig also shared his favorable experience of discussions the industrial affiliate representatives had with the UCSD officials in this matter.

Breakfast with Industry Announcement
Gayle Nugent announced the annual Breakfast with Industry meeting that would take place on Friday, November 1, 2002 at 7:30 am in the UCSD Faculty Club. Dr. Ratcliffe was an invited speaker for the event. Bill Craig shared his experience of talking at a previous Breakfast with Industry. Gayle posted her e-mail address for those who would like to advertise the event among their coworkers. Dr. Chien said that the past BWIs were all very successful and looked forward to the one on November 1.

Powell-Focht Building Update & Dedication Ceremony
Shu Chien spoke about the Dedication Ceremony of the Powell-Focht Bioengineering Hall that took place on August 12, 2002. The building construction is coming to the end. It is 98% complete and the moving is planned for the end of November - beginning of December.

The dedication ceremony was a great success. Dr. Chien praised sponsors that that made this project possible: the Whitaker Foundation's Leadership Award of $18 million, the Charles Lee Powell Foundation's gift of $8 million, a $2 million gift from the William J. von Liebig Foundation (part of a $10 million gift to establish the von Liebig Center), as well as many other generous contributions from alumni, friends and industry supporters. There were a lot of prominent people present at the ceremony. Acting Director Donna Dean of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) of NIH, Whitaker Foundation Chair of Governing Committee Burtt Holmes, Powell Foundation Chairman of the Board Joel Holiday, von Liebig Foundation Executive Director Jean Goggins, President Atkinson, Vice Chancellor Ed Holmes, interim Dean Frieder Seible, and Shu Chien were among the speakers at the ceremony.

Dr. Chien spoke about the construction of the other two adjacent buildings that is about to start to form an engineering quad. The court yard in the quad will be surrounded by the Powell-Focht Bioengineering Hall, a building to house the UCSD division of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Cal-ITē), and the Computer Science and Engineering building. Details about the building and funding can be found at http://www.jacobsschool.ucsd.edu/news_events/news_2002/20020812.shtml.

Dr. Roderic Ivan Pettigrew, Director Designate of NIH's National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) gave a visionary talk titled "Challenges for Emerging Technologies In Medicine and Biomedical Engineering". Please click on the title to listen to Dr. Pettigrew's the speech.

At the alumni reception that followed the dedication ceremony, UCSD Bioengineering alumnus Erik Engelson challenged fellow bioengineering alumni to join him in outfitting the student lounge. Erik Engelson committed to provide $1 in matching funds for every $2 gift that comes from any other individual contribution up to a total of $250,000.

The department plans to have this year's Christmas party in the new building. Dr. Chien told the members about the donor wall in the new building. Names of the donors that gave over $1000 were placed on the hall wall in the new building. Dr. Chien was told that even people who were not directly connected with bioengineering were willing to donate after they had a chance to see the wall. So, we had more donors after the ceremony. The building will be twice as large as the space the department has now but we are on the way of filling up the space. This happens because the department is actively recruiting new faculty. We already have new faculty members such as Dr. Jeffrey Hasty hired in the summer, Dr. Xiaohua Huang in the fall and Dr. Wayne Giles will come in the spring. The department is in the process of recruiting two more professors.

Announcements on JSOE Research Review (2/27-28/03), Graduate Student Annual Symposium (3/8/03) and Systemwide Bioengineering Symposium (6/22-23/03)
Shu Chien talked about the upcoming big events. The JSOE Research Review Symposium will take place on February 27, 2003. It is an annual event and has proven to be very successful. Dr. Chien mentioned that there would be industrial exhibits and posters for the event. There may be some charge for setting the exhibits up. This year, more bioengineering companies are encouraged to participate.

The previous research review events took place in the Price Center Theater and Ballroom, and this year's event will be there also. Kelly Briggs at the Dean's Office is responsible for setting up the symposium. She can be contacted at kbriggs@soe.ucsd.edu.

The Graduate Student Annual Symposium will be held on March 8, 2003. This is also an annual event and has always been a great success. The bioengineering graduate students will present on their research. Usually, there are 50-60 posters every year. Dr. Chien recalled the high standards of the past symposia and Dr. Bill Craig is impressed with the national flavor of the symposium. Dr. Craig recommended all the members to attend the event as it proved to be a great event and was a way to show support to the students. New students that had been accepted to the bioengineering graduate programs were invited to participate at the symposium and ask questions. They were most active and inquisitive participants. Many of them were excited about the established liaison between the industry and school. The GPA of the prospective student is very high these days.

The Systemwide Bioengineering Symposium will take place on June 22-23, 2003. This would be the fourth symposium. The third symposium was held in Berkley last year. The fifth symposium is planned to be in Irvine in 2004. The 2003 symposium will be held in the Price Center Theater, the Warren Lecture Halls, and the Fung Auditorium in the Powell-Focht Building. The housing for the symposium will be provided in Warren Apartments on campus. The organizers expect that two thirds of the participants will be students, and one-third - faculty and research members. Luchy Roteliuk shared his experience of attending the last symposium in Berkeley and said it was a very interesting event.

Dr. Chien remarked that the attendance of the systemwide symposium is growing each year. The next symposium may have as many as four hundred participants. The members expressed their support for the idea of industrial exhibits at the symposium. Dr. Chien asked the members for funding support of the symposium.

West Coast Regulatory Meeting Discussion
Bill Craig opened the discussion on the planning of the West Coast Regulatory workshop. A similar event was held in the spring of 2002 in Atlanta, GA. Shu Chien discussed the possibility of holding a joint meeting with the organizer of the Atlanta meeting, Robert Nerem. Dr. Nerem expressed his interest in co-sponsoring the meeting in San Diego.

Bill Craig suggested setting up a committee to organize the workshop. He also said that he was willing to participate in the committee, though he was no longer in the field. The members of the board, bioengineering faculty, and von Liebig Center were encouraged to volunteer for the committee. The best time to have the workshop was believed to be late spring of 2003. The importance of the meeting was again stressed. Anthony Ratcliffe suggested inviting the FDA representatives and members of the regulatory bodies, as well as former IAB Chair Jim Palsson.

Bill Craig asked those who would like to participate in the planning committee contact him at his his e-mail address.

Dr. Chien also informed the members of the upcoming Second La Jolla Glucose Imaging and Control Conference. The conference will be held on February 13-16, 2003 in the Marriott Hotel. The web page for the conference has more details about the conference.

Dr. Chien also reported that Dr. Bob Sah is working on a symposium on Tissue Engineering. Dr. Ratcliffe, a co-organizer of the event will announce it at the next meeting.

Dr. Ratcliffe thought it would be great to link the regulatory meeting with the spring IAB meeting. Dr. Bill Craig suggested finding the Atlanta meeting agenda as an example.

Jean Goggins expressed her belief that the workshop should be focused on the issues that are particularly interesting and important for the members. Dr. Chien stressed the importance of the von Liebig Center participation in the workshop.

Other Business and Next Meeting Date
The next Industrial Advisory Board Meeting will be determined later. A survey form will be sent to Board members to select the most suitable date.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 a.m.

Respectfully submitted: Tatyana Matusov
