Presentation: Basic Science Tools Used to Solving Orthopaedic Problems - Dr. Rick Lieber
Report on Breakfast with Industry (November 17, 2006) – Dr. Shu Chien
On November 17, 2006, the UCSD Bioengineering Graduate Students Group (BEGS) held their Annual Breakfast with Industry from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at UCSD’s Faculty Club. There were approximately 80 graduate students, 30 industry representatives, and several faculty. This professional event, sponsored by the Department of Bioengineering and the Whitaker Institute of Biomedical Engineering, offered an excellent opportunity for industrial representatives to interact person-to-person with our graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty, to discuss current and future research goals. Dr. Laurie Phillips, Program and Alliance Manager at Biogen Idec. Inc, delivered an excellent, inspiring keynote address.
System-wide Bioengineering Symposium (June 24-26, 2006) -Dr. Shu Chien
UCLA hosted the 7th Annual UC Systemwide Bioengineering Symposium from June 24-26, 2006. There were approximately 200 registrants, mainly from within the UC system, consisting of graduate and undergraduate students, fellows, and professors with representation from 9 out of 10 UC campuses. There were also participants from some non-UC institutions (CalTech, Colorado, U Penn, University Southern California) and industry.
During the 2006 symposium, a steering committee meeting noted California as being number 1 in the country in Biotech Companies, and hence the 2007 System-wide symposium to be held in UC San Francisco should aim to enhance industry participation. The symposia will be held at UC Riverside in 2008, and UC Merced in 2009.
Research Expo - Shu Chien
The Jacobs School’s 26th Annual Research Expo is scheduled for Thursday, February 22, 2007 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This annual event allows industry partners, along with Jacobs School faculty and students, to acquire a broad overview of research, while encouraging industry-university collaboration. Industry members are invited to participate in this event by providing an exhibit or demonstration from their company. This year’s event will again be held in the JSOE building and engineering courtyard. Breakouts will take place in the CSE building, P-F Bioengineering Hall, and Atkinson Hall of Calit2. All engineering M.S. and Ph.D. students are invited to display their research posters during the exhibit period. During one of the many breakout sessions, Dr. Geert Schmid-Schönbein from UCSD Bioengineering will discuss his research on the Auto-Digestion Hypothesis for Shock and Multi-Organ Failure. Other Bioengineering faculty will present on research developments in their labs. Full details regarding the Research Expo can be found at http://jacobsschool.ucsd.edu/re.
DECaF
The Disciplines of Engineering Career Fair (DECaF) will be held on February 23, 2007 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Price Center Ballrooms A & B at UCSD. DECaF is the largest annual student-managed career fair at UCSD. This event offers company representatives an opportunity to meet and recruit UCSD’s undergraduate and graduate engineers. Currently there are 45 companies signed up to participate in this event. Of these, there are only three bioengineering companies participating. IAB Members are urged to participate in this meaningful and fruitful event. DECaF is coordinated by the Triton Engineering Student Council and the 16 pre-professional engineering student organizations of the Jacobs School of Engineering. Please visit http://www.ucsd-tesc.org/decaf or contact Joyce Luke at cluke@ucsd.edu for additional information.
BE-Day
The first Annual Bioengineering Day will be held on April 13th, 2007. The mission of this event is to recognize and celebrate the achievements of bioengineering students, and to foster positive interaction among current undergraduate/graduate students, faculty, alumni, and industry professionals in related fields. Highlights will include industry presentations, alumni and industry panels, undergraduate poster exposition, guided tours, and the 2nd Annual Bioengineering Quiz Bowl. This event is sponsored by the Jacobs School of Engineering, Department of Bioengineering, and companies such as NuVasive and Amylin Pharmaceuticals.

IAB Overview and Goals– Jim Burke
Chair Burke gave an overview of IAB and its goals:
Research Collaboration – The IAB serves as the industry connection to UCSD and fosters involvement in graduate and undergraduate projects. The Board facilitates collaborative research, student internship training, and scientific interchange through symposia, seminars and scientific meetings. The IAB has been a valuable means of creating individual contacts for this collaboration. Our Board helps bridge understanding and gives our faculty insight to what is going on in the San Diego community.
Internships- UCSD prides itself on the quality of its students, both graduate and undergraduate. The Bioengineering Internship Program communicates with Industrial Affiliates regarding available internship positions, transmits such information to the students, and provides the companies with resumes of students with matching interests. The IAB is encouraged to take advantage of these internships which will hopefully lead to future employment.
Curricula Guidance– The Bioengineering Undergraduate Industry Link for Design was a stellar example of an undergraduate project between Breg and UCSD (Dr. Bob Sah) applying theories to an actual real life application.
Membership – Currently, the IAB has three new members: CODA Genomics, Amylin Pharmaceuticals, and NAMSA. Mr. Burke asked the Board to help raise participation from Industry. The following questions were asked: How can we get more members to come to quarterly meetings? How many members do we want to participate? How do we activate members who have not been participating? How do we recruit new members?
It was mentioned some may view the IAB as a philanthropic contribution but not something to participate in. It was suggested that a personal outreach by our current participating members to the non-participating members should be made to communicate the goals and importance of the IAB. Holding more meetings per quarter and/or scheduling and combining these meetings in the early morning during an event such as Research Expo on February 22, 2007, may be beneficial. Giving companies an opportunity to have a display or advertise during events may be an added attraction. An external advisory board consisting of a defined group of people was recommended. This group would have yearly meetings to discuss priorities of the Institute and the development of the IAB. Feedback would be given to the IAB through a written report. An evening dinner event consisting of industry, faculty and student presentations was also considered. Another suggestion was to change the name of our Industrial Advisory Board to Industrial Affiliates Board since the word “advisory” may be interpreted as devoting time.
IAB Meeting Schedule
The next IAB Meeting is scheduled for February 22, 2007 at 7:15 a.m. prior to the UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering Research Expo at 8:30 a.m.
For additional information and copy of hand-outs please contact Rowella Garcia at rgarcia@bioeng.ucsd.edu.
Meeting adjourned at 9:15 a.m.
