Approval of Minutes from March 17, 2006 Meeting - The minutes werwe approved as submitted.

The meeting began with welcoming remarks and introduction of new members, guests and speaker by Dr. Shu Chien, who chaired this meeting on behalf of Dr. Bill Craig.

New Members: Dr. David Roth - Senior VP for Research and Development of CODA Genomics Edward Chuong - UCSD Biomedical Engineering Society Chapter President Joyce Luke - UCSD Biomedical Engineering Society Chapter Vice President External

Guest: Yashar Behzadi - UCSD Bioengineering Ph.D. Candidate

Speaker: Dr. Walt Baxter is a Principal Scientist within Medtronic's Cardiac Rhythm Management Division helping to develop novel pacing/defibrillator leads and catheters for positioning leads within the heart. Prior to joining Medtronic, Dr. Baxter trained within the Cardiac Mechanics Research Group at the University of California, San Diego, where he developed, implemented, and validated novel algorithms for elucidating the mechanics of implanted medical devices. Dr. Baxter serves on the industrial advisory boards at UC Irvine's Department of Bioengineering and San Diego State University's Department of Mechanical Engineering, as well as UC San Diego's Whitaker Institute of Biomedical Engineering, where he continues to impact and foster valuable academic-industrial collaboration.

Presentation: Medtronic and the Whitaker Institute: a 12-year partnership providing solutions to medical device challenges ¿ Dr. Walt Baxter Please see attached file called Medtronic and the Whitaker Institute: a 12-year partnership
Dr. Chien thanked Dr. Baxter for his outstanding presentation. There were fruitful exchanges following the talk that stimulated new thinking on academia-industry cooperation.

Election of new Chairperson Dr. Laurie Phillips

The Board expresses its deep appreciation to Dr. Bill Craig for his superb leadership and outstanding contributions as Chair of the Industry Advisory Board from 2002-2006. A plaque of appreciation will be presented to Dr. Craig at the next Board meeting.
The IAB Nominating committee, that includes Dr. Bill Craig, Dr. Laurie Phillips and Dr. Walt Baxter, nominated Mr. Jim Burke, Director of Engineering at Breg, Inc. as new Chairperson. Mr. Burke has been a very active member of the Advisory Board through the years, has over 20 years of engineering management experience in a wide range of industries, including five years with medical device companies, five years with venture-funded start-ups, and seven years in military electronics.  Mr. Burke has Bachelors of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Southern California and a Masters degree in Applied Management from Lesley College in Cambridge, MA.

System-wide Bioengineering Symposium (June 24-26, 2006) -Dr. Shu Chien
UCLA hosted the 7th Annual UC Systemwide Bioengineering Symposium from June 24-26, 2006. There were approximately 200 registrants, mainly from within the UC system, consisting of graduate and undergraduate students, fellows, and professors with representation from 9 out of 10 UC campuses. There were also participants from some non-UC institutions (CalTech, Colorado, U Penn, University Southern California) and industry.
During the 2006 symposium, a steering committee meeting noted California as being number 1 in the country in Biotech Companies, and hence the 2007 System-wide symposium to be held in UC San Francisco should aim to enhance industry participation. The symposia will be held at UC Riverside in 2008, and UC Merced in 2009.

HHMI Undergraduate Project: Dr. Shu Chien
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) has awarded UCSD a four-year, $2.1 million grant to further education in the biological sciences at the UCSD undergraduate and community college transfer levels, in addition to aggressively supporting science education for students and teachers at partnering high schools and middle schools. UCSD is one of 50 universities named recently to receive such HHMI funding for biological sciences this year. The grant focuses primarily on students from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds and on selected schools having traditionally low college attendance. It will involve an array of university and community partners in carrying out its mission. Dr. Eduardo Macagno, Founding Dean, UCSD Division of Biological Sciences, is the principal investigator of the award, and Dr. Shu Chien is the co-PI.

Report on Industry Tours: Edward Chuong and Joyce Luke
The objective of the Industry Tour program is to create a mutually beneficial relationship between bright, promising UCSD bioengineering students and innovative, reputable bioengineering companies in the San Diego area. Last academic year¿s tours included Gen-Probe, Diversa Biogen Idec, Invitrogen, BREG, Amylin, Cardinal Health, and Guidant. The BMES Industry Tour program is a great way for the students to experience the industry. In addition, it proivdes a great opportunity to network with bioengineers in industry.
The first Bioengineering Quiz Bowl (BQB) held on April 7 was a very successful event with over 200 participants, including students, faculty, alumni, and industry representatives. The Quiz Bowl and the network opportunities served to strengthen the relationships among all participants. Baxter and Amylin were among the sponsoring industry affiliates.

Inaugural UCSD $50K Entrepreneurship Competition: Yashar Behzadi
UCSD is a unique place that consists of esteemed faculty, well-respected academic departments, and energetic and talented student population. However, there is a lack of mechanism to foster collaboration between students and build a sense of student community. The Triton Innovation Network (TIN) is a completely student-run organization whose mission is to foster student interaction and collaboration with a series of social and educational events throughout the year, culminating in the UCSD $50K Entrepreneurship Competition. The purpose of the UCSD $50k Entrepreneurship Competition is to motivate the formation of multi-disciplinary teams of business-minded students, engineers, and scientists to drive community development and innovation.
Team participating in the competition will consist of full-time UCSD undergraduate or graduate students. The first place team will receive 30K, with the second and third place teams receiving 10K in prize money each. An additional 30K will be given to the winning team if the foundation of their technology is based on UCSD intellectual property; this is the ¿TechTips Topper¿ sponsored by the UCSD Technology Transfer and Intellectual Property Services (TechTips), and such an added incentive will help in promoting UCSD technology.

In particular, the UCSD $50K Competition aims to:
Encourage interdisciplinary networking and collaboration. Educate UCSD students with workshops, panel discussions, and individual team mentorship. For a more detailed view of upcoming fall events please refer to: http://www.ucsd50k.com/frontend/events/calendarEvents.html
Build local support by involving the San Diego business community as judges and mentors for the competition.
Current sponsors include the Rady School of Management, Jacobs School of Engineering, Scripps Institute of Oceanography, TechTips, and several student organizations. In addition to internal UCSD support, TIN relies on the participation of the San Diego business community to support and enable the $50K Entrepreneurship Competition. Specifically, TIN is seeking support from the IAB of WIBE in the following ways:
Sponsors - in addition to providing opportunities for ambitious students, sponsors enjoy broad recognition on marketing materials and at events.
Mentors - act as a guide and advisor for the promising teams and help young entrepreneurs grow and thrive. Judges - provide valuable feedback to competitors and choose the winning teams
In addition to fostering collaboration amongst students the competition aims to build bridges between UCSD and the local San Diego business community that will lead to successful business ventures.
