Message from the Director

On August 13th, the Whitaker Foundation conducted a site visit to review the progress of the Biomedical Engineering Leadership and Development Awards at UCSD.  The Department of Bioengineering and WIBE presented the activities related to faculty recruitment, educational initiatives, research progress, core facilities, cooperation within and outside UCSD, the von Liebig gift, and the construction of the new building.   The presentations were well received.

We are currently in the process of planning the next WIBE Project on Glucose Monitoring and Control. Dr. David Gough, Chair of the Department of Bioengineering will continue to serve as Director for this Project.  Approximately one hundred attendees participated last year.  We predict that number will increase.  The event is planned for February 14-17, 2002 at the Marriott Hotel in La Jolla.  To find out more information, please visit our website at http://www-bioeng.ucsd.edu/ibme/contents.html

With a generous gift in the amount of $10 million from the William J. von Liebig Foundation of Naples, FL (see p. 3), UCSD's Jacobs School of Engineering is launching a new William J. von Liebig Center for Entrepreneurism and Technology Advancement (www.vonliebig.ucsd.edu).  This center will foster commercialization of UCSD research in bioengineering and related areas, and to educate students about the process of moving innovations from the laboratory into the marketplace.

I am happy to report that the most recent survey of the U.S. News & World Report magazine has ranked UCSD as #2 in Bioengineering in 2002, up from #3 last year.

It is my pleasure to welcome our new Industrial Affiliates Program member Genoptix. ( p. 2).

The 25h Annual Meeting of the American Society of Biomechanics took place on August 9-12, 2001.  (P. 3).

We warmly welcome the new students joining the Department of Bioengineering (p. 11). We sincerely congratulate Dr. Bob Sah for winning the prestigious award (p. 9) and our new graduates for completing their education at UCSD Bioengineering (p. 7).
